ABOUT :

Meet Norman Rockwell, our giant love bug! Norman was originally purchased from a backyard breeder as a St Bernard and Mastiff mix, and was then surrendered at 8 months old because he had grown too big. He was facing euthanasia at a municipal shelter, once again due to his size, as the shelter didn’t have any kennels large enough to house him. Norman was saved, and transferred to a rescue in the states. He received some excellent training, mastering his puppy life skills, basic obedience, and other commands. He was adopted - and then returned a few months later when his DNA test came back and showed he was St Bernard and Malinois, and not Mastiff as previously stated. Since then, Norman has consistantly been a victim of his large size - there was simply no family ready to handle this much dog in the area he was in. That’s how Norman found his way to the RAD family, for another chance at finding a forever home!

Living with a great foster in the states while waiting to find an adopter served Norman well. He spent time living with 12+ other dogs of all sizes and ages, interacted with children, cats and other animals on a regular basis, and continued his training. Norman walks great on leash when using his gentle leader, he is comfortable in a crate, he is comfortable being left home alone without being destructive, and he plays great with other dogs. He loves car rides and usually falls asleep on the back seat, sometimes so deeply that he falls right off and rolls down to the floor of the car!

At his size, Norman is a lot of dog. He is STRONG! Despite this, he is gentle and loves to flop on his back and demand belly rubs. He takes his treats gently, and doesn’t jump up on people. He may knock smaller children over - not because he means to but because he doesn’t always realize how big he is.

Like any dog, Norman needs to have his boundaries respected. He loves his bed and his toys, but prefers not to be bothered when he is relaxing with them. With a dog this big, it’s extra important to make sure to remain aware of his signals and ensure that he is comfortable with what’s happening. As much as he loves people and pets, he still needs his alone time!
