ABOUT :
Oh Rey. Our baby shark. Our ‘Rey’ of sunshine. This girl is so special to everyone at RAD and has always held a special place in our heart.
Rey was originally rescued by RAD in 2020. An unethical breeder was ready to euthanize her due to her birth defects, and a good samaritan stepped in and helped get her into our care. Rey received lots of physiotherapy and medical attention, and was able to find a loving home after a few months with us. Unfortunately, Rey’s amazing adopter passed away unexpectedly earlier this summer, and Rey found herself back with her friends at RAD.
At just 3.5 years old, Rey has experienced so much, and has proven, time and time again that she is tough and resilient. She has been dealt a lot of bad cards in her short life, but she never ceases to amaze everyone who meets her with her happy disposition and energy. She is affectionate and happy with everyone she meets, and adapts quickly to changes. She is a headstrong, sweet and playful girl, who doesn’t let anything stop her!
Even with her limb deformities, Rey loves to be active. Her ideal home would be somewhere where she could continue to swim regularily - she absolutely LOVES it, and as a bonus it serves as a great low impact exercise for her. She also loves to play tug of war, and chase her foster brothers all around the house and yard. She has lots of energy when she wakes up in the morning, and would do best with a good morning activity, a nap in the afternoon, and some more exercise before bed. Ideally, a home with a yard would be best for her as walking on pavement can be rough on her paws.
When Rey doesn’t get enough exercise, or when she becomes overstimulated, her alter ego cREY can come out. She can bark, hyperfixate or get mouthy when she is in this state, but she does calm down when the stimulus is removed or with some time. She does not do well when crated, but when she is loose in the home or in a playpen she is comfortable and non destructive.
Medically, Rey will require joint supplements for the rest of her life. As she ages, her medical needs may change, so a good relationship with your veterinarian will be key! Currently, she does not require any regular medications, but she is eating a special diet that contains the supplements for her joints and is also limited in ingredients, as she does have some mild allergies. She is prone to urinary infections, so it will be important that her family pays attention to any signs that one is developping. Her eyes can be sensitive sometimes and leak, but they do not cause her problems regularily.
